Some Squeaking Cleopatra Boy:
A Redress of William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, among other things.
Some Squeaking Cleopatra Boy: A Redress of William Shakespeare’s Antony & Cleopatra, among other things is a new multi-media devised work by Detroit-based performance ensemble A Host of People. The piece continues and hones our practice of combining heightened text, narrative and non-narrative storytelling devices, choreography, immersive theater techniques and video projection to create a unified whole that is much more than the sum of its parts. However, Cleopatra Boy also marks an exciting departure for the company, as it is the first time we have approached either a canonical text or Classical Antiquity. Shakespeare’s Antony & Cleopatra is the perfect vehicle for a Host of People’s strange theatrical brew in part because it is itself uncategorizable: is it a history, a romance, a tragedy, a comedy, a Roman play, or an Egyptian one? It is, in the best sense, a problem play and A Host of People loves to tackle big problems.
